James Stephens (1880-1950)

James Stephens was an Irish novelist and poet. Born in Dublin, he was brought up in a Protestant orphanage, the Meath Protestant Industrial School for Boys. He graduated as a solicitor's clerk and competed in-and won-several athletics competitions, despite his small stature. Stephens produced many retellings of Irish myths and fairy tales, along with several original novels based loosely on such tales, and his writing was marked by a rare combination of humour and lyricism.
